Flight summons many impressions: the process of moving through air or space; the act of imagining extraordinary things; and the act of escaping. Flightscape encompasses an imaginary plane, much like how a landscape shows an expanse of scenery, or a seascape paints a picture of the sea. Flightscape shows an expanse of emotions, and paints a picture of the spirit. What is important is not what we are running from, but what we are running towards. These are all macro shots of various crystal objects I have owned for years. By focusing on a small piece of the object, and specifically the light that passes through it, we get to see details usually missed. A whole world is discovered in an area the size of a penny. I have an emotional connection to these objects. They have come to mean “home” to me as much as any building or neighbourhood. The turbulence and joy of a life well lived are all here in these photographs, as manifested by a bright colour or dark band. I have had to delve inward to make these expressions. Every act of creation involves an act of exploration. To produce something new, you must first discover something new. The pieces in this show explore the inner world, as much as the outer. The combination of line, colour and form expresses much more than the objects photographed. How we reflect upon these images, the associations conjured and the feelings invoked, are as important as the images’ creation.
